In this Folio, I'll be able to show you the fundamentals, but to get really good... you'll need to engage, make use of all the resources and PRACTICE!

Homework
The only homework you will need to do is this:
1. Join ArtStation Discover https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/artstation-discover/ghkbedmkakkdhfkhchadmkhlflnafocm?hl=en
You can also download the app. for you iPhone and iPad at https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/artstation-app/id924645286?mt=8
2. Open Google Chrome (Artstation Discover should Open)
3. Go to Settings and change filters to CHARACTERS
4. Watch for at least 1/2 hour (be careful it can get addictive) and make note of the designs you are particularly drawn to and CRUCIALLY the designers who have created these images.
Note: If you press PAUSE on the image you like, you'll see the designers name, if you CLICK on that and it will take you to their site.
OBVIOUSLY if you are falling behind in class , that will also require you to complete work at home.

What is Entertainment Design?
Entertainment designers bring stories to life for the entertainment industry through the design of conceptual worlds and creation of memorable characters for animated films.
What is Concept Design?
Concept artists are fuelled by their imagination. They create fictional worlds and breathe life into characters and creatures. Utilizing strong drawing skills, they can transform words and ideas into fantastic visuals.
Task
Design a concept for 'Gill-Man' for the remake of the classic 1954 movie, 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon'.
ASSIGNMENT
Your assignment is to design a creature for the movie, 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon'. You will decide on the aquatic direction this character will take, choose your reference images, and create a concept design.

Creature Design 101
So, WHAT MAKES A GOOD CREATURE?
F.A.C.T.S
To create creatures that are aesthetically pleasing and visually engaging we need to create visual interest.
Concept designer and lecturer Carlo Arellano uses the acronym 'F.A.C.T.S' to help his students develop rich, believable creatures and we will be doing the same thing.

F: Form Follows Function
Always!
The shape (form) of something describes what they do (function).
So, something that looks pretty but does not perform or communicate the function it was designed for, is BAD Design.

Shape Language allows follows this rule... that certain forms suggest a characters function in a story.
A: Archetype
These are recurring themes in story telling. Certain characters (heroes, villains etc.) appear over and over throughout history, whether in Shakespeare, Disney, or even Harry Potter. Use them to enhance your own characters.
C: Characterisation
These are visual elements that reveal the history of your character. These provide clues to your characters backstory which makes them a more interesting character.
T: Tools
Can be either external or internal objects that allow your character to function in the story.
All of these elements effect your characters Silhouette
S: Silhouette
An effective silhouette is an excellent starting point for starting to add flesh to your ideas. They are designed to be quick, but informative sketches that communicate your creatures personality.
