FOLIO: OPTION 2
Before We Get Started!
Resources
I have a wide variety of tutorials and books on Environmental Concept Design, from artists like; Simon Scales, James Paick and John Park.
In this Folio, I'll be able to show you the fundamentals, but to get really good... you'll need to engage, make use of all the resources and PRACTICE!

Homework
The only homework you will need to do is this:
1. Join ArtStation Discover https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/artstation-discover/ghkbedmkakkdhfkhchadmkhlflnafocm?hl=en
You can also download the app. for you iPhone and iPad at https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/artstation-app/id924645286?mt=8
2. Open Google Chrome (Artstation Discover should Open)
3. Go to Settings and change filters to ENVIRONMENTS
4. Watch for at least 1/2 hour (be careful it can get addictive) and make note of the designs you are particularly drawn to and CRUCIALLY the designers who have created these images.
Note: If you press PAUSE on the image you like, you'll see the designers name, if you CLICK on that and it will take you to their site.
OBVIOUSLY if you are falling behind in class , that will also require you to complete work at home.

What is Entertainment Design?
Entertainment designers bring stories to life for the entertainment industry through the design of conceptual worlds and creation of memorable characters for animated films.
What is Concept Design?
Concept artists are fuelled by their imagination. They create fictional worlds and breathe life into characters and creatures. Utilizing strong drawing skills, they can transform words and ideas into fantastic visuals.
Task
Design a concept for a fictional environment.
ASSIGNMENT
Your assignment is to design an environment for a planet in the game, 'No Man's Sky'. You will decide on the location, choose your reference images, and create a concept design. You will create an environment for one of the three options:
1) Frozen Tundra,
2) Desert City, or
3) Post-Apocalyptic City Scape.
DELIVERABLE
Display your concept on a Presentation Board.

Composition 101
To create an effective environment, we need to develop an understanding of WHAT MAKES A GOOD COMPOSITION?
Rule of Three
To create images that are aesthetically pleasing and visually engaging we need to create visual interest.
We do this by avoiding symmetry and 50/50 splits (in composition/value and scale)
To avoid these splits we use the RULE OF THREE in the following ways:
We do this by avoiding symmetry and 50/50 splits (in composition/value and scale)
To avoid these splits we use the RULE OF THREE in the following ways:
1. Composition
Designers, Artists and Photographers have used the Rule of Thirds in their compositions for centuries.
When used, it will divide the picture into 9 equal parts that are separated by two horizontal and vertical lines.
The main idea behind this is to place your most important element/object on one of the intersections where the lines converge (the +'s), as well as along or near the vertical line of wherever your focal may lie.
It is believed that when this is used and your subject/focal sits on one of these spots, it creates more interest in your picture rather than having it centred.

2. Value
Using different Values will help you create depth and variety in your design. This is called Aerial Perspective. In aerial perspective lighter values are used in the background (BG), medium values in the middle ground (MG) and dark values in the foreground (FG).
Scale
To continue to add the visual variety we are looking for, including a variety of different sized shapes (large/medium/small) can be used. These are useful for also communicating the size of the environment we are developing. Adding a recognisable form like that of a human figure helps us make sense of the environment.
